Councillor encourages pride in South Africa’s diverse heritage
A local ward councillor looks forward to celebrating her Xhosa heritage in September, with a special appreciation for isiXhosa, traditional attire and the uniqueness of her culture.
With Heritage Month approaching in September, Mohlakeng politician Khuziwe Tsotetsi is preparing to celebrate her Xhosa roots and encourage others to take pride in their own cultures.
Tsotetsi says she loves everything about her heritage, particularly the isiXhosa language and traditional attire.
“I love the language, attire and everything to do with my culture,” she says.
She believes South Africa’s diverse cultures and languages are something everyone should be proud of and hopes Heritage Month will encourage people to embrace where they come from.
One of the things she particularly appreciates about isiXhosa is its distinctiveness.
“I love the fact that our language is very distinct. It stands out when you speak isiXhosa with someone,” she said.
For Tsotetsi, the month will provide an opportunity for people to celebrate their heritage while helping ensure their cultures and languages continue to be appreciated by future generations.
