A Mohlakeng pitbull named Allegra is recovering at Randfontein Dierehospitaal following a three-hour operation to save her life after she was shot while defending her owners during an attempted burglary incident.

Allegra was admitted to the hospital on August 5 with a gunshot wound that caused severe internal injuries.

The SPCA requested assistance from the veterinary hospital, where Dr Johan Naude and his team operated to save her life. Naude said the bullet narrowly missed Allegra’s spine but damaged her colon and small intestine before ending in her spleen.

“It’s not every day you hear of pitbulls who defended the owner, got shot and survived,” said Dr Naude.

As Allegra’s medical costs increased beyond the initial estimate, the hospital agreed to cover the additional expenses. Dr Sosa Jacob, another veterinarian at the animal hospital, said the decision was made to ensure Allegra could receive the treatment she needed.

Rehabilitation underway

Despite her critical condition, Allegra has continued to fight and is getting stronger.

“She is learning how to walk again and trying to strengthen the muscles on her legs, especially her right leg,” said Dr Naude.

He said Allegra will need rehabilitation, good nutrition to support her joints, and potentially swimming as part of her recovery.

Her owner, Sonto Moeletsi, said the family is proud of Allegra and grateful to the veterinary team for giving her a second chance.

“The whole family is happy and proud of Allegra. The kids in the house can’t wait to see her,” she said. Allegra’s recovery continues as she takes small but important steps towards getting back on her feet.
