East school kids taught about recycling
"Many things can be produced from recycled materials."
Learners at Rietvallei Akademie were taught about recycling on Thursday.
A representative of the paper recycler Mpact, Johannes Mohlala, said the need for sustainability made it vital for children to learn the importance of recycling from a young age.
“It’s so easy for children to throw things on the floor,” he said.
“By teaching them while they’re still young, we’re working towards preventing dumping areas from being formed.”
Mohlala said the benefits of recycling included creating new products from what was previously considered to be waste material.
“Many things could be produced from recycled materials,” he noted.
“Recycling could also be an opportunity for young kids to make some money from what they’ve collected.”
Mohlala encouraged teachers to make their classes compete against each other for prizes.
“The class which brings the most paper will be rewarded.”
A finalist in the Tammy Taylor Mrs SA competition, Laetitia Swanepoel, initiated the project to teach children as part of her campaign.
She said they would not only learn about the value of recycling but also get an opportunity to give a helping hand to charity.
“The money made from all the recycling will be donated to the Centurion Hospice,” she said.
