Pretoria volunteers bring relief to drought stricken area

Volunteers joined Laudium Disaster Management, Tshwane metro police and other organisations in Operation Hydrate to deliver water to Swartruggens.

About 100 volunteers from Pretoria travelled alongside Proudly SA, Laudium Disaster Management, Shoprite, Thirsty Water and the Tshwane metro police to deliver thousands of litres of water to Swartruggens in the North West.

Yusuf Abramjee, global communications director at Crime Stoppers International, said in a statement that the need was massive.

“Residents stood patiently waiting for the seven trucks to arrive. We also had two tankers filled with water.”

The taps ran dry in the North West town 5 months ago, says local mayor Kim Medupi. She joined the activists to distribute the water.

While most people were filled with joy at getting drinking water and celebrated, others were angry with government for not delivering. Politics aside, we are all delighted that we managed to quench the thirst of thousands of people. Operation Hydrate delivered some 30 000 litres to the area today.

“Thank you to all the donors and volunteers. Thank you to all who made their time and resources available. We salute you,” Abramjee said.

Abramjee says Operation Hydrate will continue.

“We are looking at a long term solution such as drilling boreholes. We can only do this with your support,”he said.
