South Africa still has not won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics but has two silver in the bag.
At the London Games in 2012 Team SA finished with three gold medals and six overall.
With only five days into the Olympics, it remains to be seen if the team can do better than their 2012 counterparts.
Cameron van der Burgh was the first to secure a medal in 2016 when he finished second behind Adam Peaty of Great Britain in the breaststroke 100m final on Monday.
On Tuesday Le Clos added SA’s second silver after finishing second in the men’s 200m freestyle.
On Wednesday morning America’s Michael Phelps ruined Chad le Clos’s opportunity of winning a gold medal in the 200m butterfly.
All is not lost however in the swimming department. Le Clos still has to compete in the 100m freestyle on Thursday.
Last Saturday Louis Meintjes came close to a top spot in the men’s cycling when he finished seventh overall in the road race.
Local sprinter Akani Simbine will be in action on Saturday when he takes on the big boys in the 100m athletics track item.
Caster Semenya, who is in action next Wednesday, remains SA’s gold medal hopeful in the 800m race.
