Claims of ‘snow’ in Pretoria dispelled by weather service
There couldn’t have been snowfall in Pretoria on Sunday morning, and what residents experienced was either fog or a drizzle.

The South African Weather Services has dispelled claims of snow falling in Pretoria, following social media posts that suggested that the eastern parts of the city had experienced this phenomenon.
The country has been experiencing cold weather conditions as a result of a cut-off low which has been bringing snow, severe thunderstorms as well heavy rainfall in provinces such as the Northern Cape, the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
Some Pretoria residents took to social media, sharing that they were experiencing snow in areas such Morelatapark, Garsfontein, Faerie Glen on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said this could not have been snow.
“Snow is out of the question,” she said.
“There was not enough cloud cover even for rain. We didn’t forecast rain for Pretoria.
“An area would need a maximum of about 9, 8 degrees Celsius to get snow. It would have to be that cold for maybe 5fivedays straight.”
Chiloane said any precipitation experienced in Pretoria would have been fog or drizzle at most, as temperatures did not allow for snow to form.
She said the cut-off low weather system was only affecting Pretoria by causing a significant drop in temperatures.
Residents have shared on Rekord’s Facebook page what they experienced in their areas:

Chiloane said the cloudy conditions would continue into Monday morning, with temperatures slightly increasing.
Sunday remained cold and cloudy with a maximum of 16, while Monday would see a slight increase to 18 degrees.
“Monday morning will still be under cloudy conditions, but the weather will clear up after 12:00, with a little bit of sky,” she said.
“Temperatures will start to recover tomorrow afternoon, leading to a clear skies on Wednesday.
“Even though temperatures will pick up, it will not be necessarily warm. The temperatures will remain in the cool category.”
