Pretoria West learner wins Round 2 of provincial science olympiad
A Pretoria learner has won the district round of the GDE Natural Sciences and Technology Olympiad, earning a place in the provincial competition later this year.
Jason Porter (11) from Pretoria West has given his school, Laerskool Westerlig, bragging rights as he came first in the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Natural Sciences and Technology School Olympiad at the district level.
The Olympiad serves as an identifier of scientific talent, promotes critical thinking, and encourages primary and high school learners to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology.
The competition is split into three rounds. Round 1 is the school level, where each school selects its top science students to represent it at the district. Round 2 pits various schools from the same district against one another. This is where Jason emerged first out of all Grade 5 participants in the Tshwane West District. Round three is the provincial level, and Round 4 is the national grand finale.
Because Jason won his district, he has officially qualified for the Gauteng Province Olympiad and will compete against the first place winners from all the other education districts across Gauteng.
His mother, Gwendolyn Porter, says that she is incredibly proud of her son’s achievements and perseverance.
“Although he was feeling unwell on the day of the test, he showed remarkable courage and determination. Born and bred in Pretoria, Jason is working towards being in the automotive industry, and the way his wheels are moving, he is rolling in the right direction,” Gwendolyn said.
At the provincial finale, winners usually receive a substantial prize.
Jason says that although he didn’t feel well during the district round, the result he achieved made him feel much better, and he looks forward to competing provincially.
“I didn’t feel well, but I did well (laughs). I didn’t think I’d be number one, and I’m so excited for the next round and can’t wait,” Jason said.
Laerskool Westerlig is requesting sponsorship and community assistance to make the next round for Jason possible. For more information, contact the school on 012 3861 368.
