Man arrested attempting to exchange fake Euro banknotes in Pretoria east
“The shop attendant delayed the exchange until the police arrived and the suspect was arrested for possession of suspected fake banknotes,” police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane said.
A 36-year-old man arrested in the east of Pretoria while trying to exchange suspected fake Euro banknotes worth R36 000 is expected in the Pretoria magistrate’s court this week.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane said the man was arrested at a currency exchange shop in Silver Oaks after the police were tipped off by shop staff.
“The shop attendant was very careful and realised the money was actually fake and notified the police,” Mbatsane said.
“The attendant then managed to delay the exchange process until the police got to the shop and the suspect was subsequently arrested.”
Mbatsane said the man had 200 Euro notes valued at R36 000, and was charged “for being in possession of suspected false banknotes” and the investigation continues.
“Crimes of false banknotes are not common in our area, we only get such once in a while,” he said.
In an unrelated police operation, a 30-year-old man was arrested in possession of drugs in Zwavelpoort.
“We found 49 bags of nyaope and six of crystal meth, dagga as well as multiple needles and syringes,” Mbatsane said.
He said the police were assisted by a private security company during the operation.

“Boschkop station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Witbooi thanked Bidvest Protea Coin, Fidelity and Tactical Eagle for providing the most needed manpower,” he said.
