Metro and FF Plus launch Centurion CID

The Tshwane metro and Freedom Front Plus recently launched the Centurion West City Improvement District (CID) to help service delivery in Centurion’s CBD and selected residential areas.

The launch comes on the back of the council affecting the resolution for the CID initiative partnering with the FF Plus in November 2023.

The Centurion West CID is a cooperative agreement between the metro, security firm MonitorNet and other role players such as Ignite Urban, that applied the CID.

Community safety MMC Grandi Theunissen said the main aim of the CID is to improve service delivery in specific areas with a focus on creating safe residential and commercial areas in the metro.

“Four smart streetlights working with solar power and equipped with cameras will also be erected soon. These will be monitored 24/7 by a high-technology control room and be supported by a professional armed response team, which will respond as soon as criminal activity is detected,” said Theunissen.

The role players consider the establishment a step forward in combatting crime.

Through the initiative, the process of applying for a CID has been simplified. In the past, a CID could only be established if 60% of residents and 70% of businesses in the relevant area agreed to it. An additional monthly fee was also levied to finance the initiative.

With the new concept, thanks to the role players, creating a CID has been streamlined and happens on a voluntary basis. The application process has also been made easier.

Theunissen said that another 16 urban CID applications have already been approved and 20 more are in the pipeline.

“Establishing a CID could also be seen as realising a form of self-determination and doing things yourself,” he said.

On the night of April 3, six unknown assailants assaulted and overpowered two unarmed guards at the Claudius Substation in Cuprene Street.

The substation was stripped of over 200m of cable from the transformers, leaving residents in the dark for hours.

This is the second time an incident like this has occurred in six months.

At the time of the incident metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said: “The city is equally concerned about the acts of crime in the affected suburb. It hopes that visible policing in the sector where the substation is located will be activated while the municipality is looking at other measures to compliment patrolling by the law-enforcement agencies.”
