The Tshwane Metro has officially handed over the upgraded Reima Park Secondary Substation in Bronkhorstspruit, which is expected to improve the reliability and strengthen the electricity supply.

The substation is situated in Ward 102, supplies electricity to the Reima Park residential area and Bronkhorstspruit Hospital, making it a critical piece of infrastructure for both local households and essential public services.

The metro described the project as another milestone in the multiparty coalition government’s Electricity Stabilisation Plan.

MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo officially handed over the refurbished substation. He said this investment shows the city’s commitment to modernising electricity infrastructure and improving service delivery for residents and businesses.

“The completion of the Reima Park Secondary Substation demonstrates the city’s commitment to implementing the Electricity Stabilisation Plan and ensuring that residents and businesses have access to a more reliable electricity supply,” Boshielo said.

The Electricity Stabilisation Plan serves as the city’s blueprint for restoring the reliability of Tshwane’s electricity network through targeted investment in critical infrastructure, the replacement of ageing equipment, improved network resilience, and enhanced operational efficiency.

He said the refurbishment project was completed over an eight month period from November 2025 to June 2026.

According to Boshielo, the project involved the complete refurbishment of the substation building, upgrades to the site’s security infrastructure and the replacement of obsolete and unsafe 11kV switchgear panels with modern equipment.

“The ageing switchgear had become increasingly unreliable, resulting in frequent electricity outages and posing safety risks to municipal maintenance and operating personnel.”

Boshielo said the new switchgear will improve the electricity network’s reliability, resilience, and safety in the area.

“The project also introduced advanced protection systems and remote-control technology, enabling the city to respond more rapidly to electricity faults and improve network management.”

He explained that the upgraded system allows faulty circuits to be isolated without affecting the entire electricity network, meaning outages can be confined to the affected area, while electricity supply to surrounding residents and businesses remains uninterrupted.

The project created additional switchgear capacity, enabling the city to accommodate future developments and connect to new residents and businesses as Bronkhorstspruit continues to grow.

Boshielo said the upgraded infrastructure will support investment and economic development in the area while improving electricity reliability for existing consumers.

“The completion of the Reima Park Secondary Substation reflects the city’s continued investment in modernising its electricity infrastructure to improve the reliability of supply, strengthen essential public services, support economic activity and create capacity for future growth,” he said.

He stated that, beyond improving the electricity infrastructure, the project also generated socio-economic benefits by creating 11 employment opportunities under EPWP during the construction phase, contributing to local job creation and skills development.

Boshielo thanked officials from the Energy and Electricity Business Unit, the appointed contractor, the project team, the ward councillor and all stakeholders involved in successfully delivering the project.
