Free art skills offered in east

The forum has come up with an afternoon of arts awareness for music, poetry, drama, visual art, fashion and dance.

Mamelodi arts and culture forum (Macfo) offers local artists skills development classes and lessons for free.

The training is to help Mamelodi artists discover their hidden talents.

Aubrey Motau of Dramatic Arts said Macfo was a non-profit organisation dealing with matters of the arts, culture and heritage in Mamelodi and beyond.

The forum has started an arts awareness programme working on music, poetry, drama, visual art, fashion and dance with local artists.

Motau said the classes will be held at the forum in Mamelodi West on the corner of Shabangu and Maphalla streets from 16 March to 16 April from 09:00 to 14:00 and, for school children, from 15:00 to 17:00.

“The forum’s main aim is to keep the youth away from alcohol, drugs, crime and teenage pregnancy.

“The programme will expose the hidden artistic talents in the community of Mamelodi,” said Motau.

The local artists will take part in the introduction of theatre and they will get an opportunity to do acting, script writing, play directing, play making and miming.

“At the completion of the course, participants will take part in a theatre, drama production to perform on various platforms,” he said.

Samuel Lentswenyana Mokoena of visual arts and crafts, said locals would be taught in drawing, colour testing, crafts and using recycled materials in their product.

He said after completing the training, they will exhibit at the Mamelodi art centre.

This lesson will also help the youth create jobs for themselves to alleviate poverty.
