Heritage enriched in Eersterust

“I enjoy history and feel that some heritage sites needs to receive recognition.”

A Moot resident has taken it upon himself to commemorate South Africa’s history – by building scale models of the country’s most famous heritage sites.

Casper Bicks of Eersterust has constructed models of South African heritage sites such as Robben Island, the Voortrekker Monument and the Cradle of Humankind.

“I enjoy history and feel that some heritage sites deserve more recognition,” he said.

“Many do not know about these places filled with history, so I am doing this to educate them.”

He said making the models was enjoyable.

“I visited all these heritage sites throughout South Africa to find inspiration for the models.”

Bicks said his “social science” project would especially benefit students of South African history.

“Under one roof, children will be able to see the heritage sites of South Africa and study our national symbols and coat of arms,” said Bicks.

Bicks received the Golden Shield heritage award in October last year for hosting a heritage show on 30 September last year.

“It was a huge success and we would like to thank the schools for sending their learners. It was a real eye-opener to them,” he said.

Bicks said another heritage show was planned for February.

“We always hear of bad news in Eersterust. It is time Eersterust starts getting good news and have something to be proud of,” Bicks said.

“Heritage is so important. We should all know where we come from. We should be proud to be South African.”
