Zandfontein Cemetery still not completely cleaned

Tshwane Metro allegedly failed to complete the maintenance of the Zandfontein Cemetery.

The Tshwane metro has finally stuck to its promise to have the Zandfontein Cemetery cleaned up, but did not get to complete the whole of this task.

Some residents said that they were happy when they saw some of the workers at the cemetery, but are left unsatisfied with the half-done job..

“It is so disappointing that something was done only after we complained for so many years. This is where my mother is resting and I expect the place to be cleaned up regularly,” Dipou Makuwa said.

Makuwa, like other community members felt that their family members are being neglected.

Anna Pienaar mentioned that if there aren’t people to clean up the cemetery then the Tshwane metro should hire people on street corners looking for a job.

According to Maritza Atkinson, the Tuine division is still in a bad state with graves falling in, grass long and dead flowers and dirt lying all over.

“The cemetery is still in a terrible state, as well as my parent’s resting place. The whole area looks terrible. There are rubbish everywhere, graves that have fallen in and long grass perfect for hiding,” Atkinson explained.

According to Tshwane metro spokesperson, Selby Bokaba the maintenance of the cemetery is done on a monthly basis. He said that the work was in progress and that it should have been completed by the third week of January.

The metro had not responded as to why the cemetery has not been completely cleaned up yet.
