Health and wellness initiative launches in Ga-Rankuwa
A new community-based wellness club in Ga-Rankuwa is bringing preventative health services, exercise, counselling and mental health support closer to residents.
Residents of Ga-Rankuwa now have access to a new community-based health and wellness initiative aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles, mental well-being and early intervention.
The Hope Through Health & Wellness Club, established by Hope for the Hopeless Care Centre, officially opened on August 17 as part of the organisation’s efforts to make health, wellness and psychosocial support more accessible within the community.
According to Maggie Mlangeni of the care centre, the initiative was established in response to the need for accessible, community-based health and wellness support in Ga-Rankuwa.
Mlangeni said the organisation has traditionally focused on supporting vulnerable members of the community, including older people and those affected by social and health challenges.
She said the centre recognised that community members often need more than medical treatment, with physical activity, health education, emotional support and early intervention also playing an important role in maintaining overall well-being.
“The club therefore brings these elements together in one community-based programme,” said Mlangeni.
The programme is designed to focus on prevention rather than waiting until residents become seriously ill. It combines preventative health services, physical wellness activities and psychosocial support.
Residents can access basic health checks and health screening, health education and awareness programmes, exercise and physical wellness activities, counselling and psychosocial support.
The club will also provide support to people managing chronic conditions, mental health awareness and emotional support, as well as social and recreational activities.

Mlangeni said residents who require additional medical or social intervention will be referred to appropriate healthcare or social-service providers.
For people living with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis, the club will focus on education, support, monitoring and prevention rather than replacing clinical medical treatment.
Residents will be encouraged to participate in suitable physical activities, undergo basic health checks and learn more about managing their conditions and developing healthier daily routines.
“Where a person’s health needs require medical assessment or treatment beyond what the club can provide, they will be encouraged or referred to an appropriate healthcare facility,” she said.
Mental health is also a key component of the initiative. Residents experiencing stress, depression, emotional difficulties or other psychosocial challenges will have access to supportive counselling, psychological support and mental health education.
Mlangeni said the intention was to create a safe environment where residents could discuss the challenges they face without feeling judged.
She added that the club recognises the connection between physical health, emotional well-being and people’s social circumstances.

The opening attracted members of the Ga-Rankuwa community who attended to learn more about the initiative and participate in the launch.
The response was described as encouraging, with residents expressing interest in having health, wellness and psychosocial support available closer to where they live.
The club is intended to serve the wider Ga-Rankuwa community, with a focus on making health and wellness support accessible to people who may face barriers to accessing such services.
While the organisation’s existing programmes have a strong focus on community members, including senior citizens, Mlangeni said the club should be viewed as community-based and inclusive rather than being limited to a specific age group.
The current programme operates from 08:00 to 10:00.
Mlangeni said any expansion to additional days or longer operating hours would depend on community demand, the availability of professionals, resources and funding.
The organisation, however, hopes to grow the programme where resources allow.
