The Tshwane metro is in the final phase of planning to increase awareness of the free Wi-Fi at Church Square and other free Wi-Fi zones around Pretoria. The metro revealed this when they responded on Wednesday to Rekord’s written questions. Rekord discovered that there were a high number of students and residents who were still in the dark about the existence of the free Wi-Fi service at Church Square in the inner city. Some were aware of the service, but not that it was free.
Marketing will include the posting of signage advertisements of the free Wi-Fi service in all free Wi-Fi zones around Pretoria from March. This will help make students who do not live in Pretoria aware of the services. The metro said they had tried to market the free Wi-Fi service extensively through various media channels since the launch at Church Square in November last year. They said they had had about 41 630 sessions, with an average of 800 users connecting daily, since the launch. “This number is growing on a daily basis. Each site can handle thousands of connections simultaneously,” the metro said.
The metro also said that they had made a lot of information about the project available on their website, however, they acknowledged that there was a need to do more to market the service. They explained that Phase 2 of the marketing included targeting schools in Tshwane.
