Almost 2 000 tablets already stolen from schools

The DA is concerned about stolen tablets and e-learning strategies in Gauteng.

At least 1 188 tablets provided to schools this year, have already been stolen. About 240 of these were taken from schools in the Moot area since August.

These tablets were provided to schools across Gauteng this year, with delivery details about the tablets kept confidential for security reasons.

In the Moot burglars have targeted a number of primary schools, breaking into safes and getting away with tablets and other items. Schools that have been hit include Laerskool Pierneef, Nellie Swart, Queenswood, Generaal Jacques Pienaar, Derdepoort and Totuisdal.

In a statement this week the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng said they didn’t think there was any e-learning strategy as yet in the region. According to Khume Ramulifho, DA Shadow MEC of Education the Gauteng Education Department has supplied tablets to schools, but they have done so without any implementation plan.

Ramulifho said he will be submitting questions to the MEC for Education in Gauteng to establish whether the stolen tablets will be replaced and what measures will be taken to prevent further thefts.

Villieria police spokesperson captain Coba Brits said the same modus operandi was used at every school in the Moot to get hold of the tablets. “The thieves disconnected the school’s alarm systems and cameras. They then broke in through the roof and used an angle grinder to cut open the safes, making a clean sweep of tablets, computers and money.”

The Department of Education was not available for comment by the time the article was published.
