Theft out of motor vehicles on the rise

Theft out of motor vehicles is on the rise in the Eersterust area and police are advising motorists to lock away all valuables in the car's boot.

Police have warned that theft out of motor vehicles was on the rise in the Eersterust area.

Eersterust police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said residents should take the necessary precautions to safeguard their valuables during the festive period. “Several residents suffered a loss as a result of their vehicles being broken into. Most vehicles were targeted because owners left their valuables where criminals could see them from the outside.”

Police have since increased their patrols and visibility in the area. Shibambo said several criminals have been arrested in connection with this crime.

Police have issued the following safety tips that might reduce the risk of theft out of motor vehicles:

*Lock all valuables away in the boot of your vehicle.

*If possible, manually lock your vehicle and activate the alarm system.

*Do not leave your GPS on the windscreen while the vehicle is parked.

*Approach any intersection with caution and be on the look-out for people loitering in the vicinity.

*Close your windows when approaching an intersection.

*Park your vehicle in the garage when not in use.

*Ensure that your carport is well-lit at night.

*Activate the vehicle’s alarm while the vehicle is parked – even when parked for a short while.
