Pretoria home CCTV systems among those hacked by live-streaming website
Residents with CCTV cameras in their homes are urged to change their security settings as a website can broadcast live streaming footage from your home.
Residents with close circuit television cameras installed in their homes and businesses have been advised to change their security settings as they could be easily watched by outsiders.
It has emerged that an international website can access live streaming footage directly from such cameras.
The website, Insecam , states that it was designed to show the importance of security settings.
“Here you can see thousands of such cameras located in cafes, shops, malls, industrial objects and bedrooms of all countries of the world. To browse cameras, just select the country or camera type,” reveals the website’s homepage.
About 90 South African homes and public areas are featured on the website, with live footage from Centurion, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
According to Insecam, the invasion of privacy through their website is due to administrators forgetting to change their default passwords such as: ‘admin:admin’ or ‘admin:12345’ on security surveillance systems, online camera or DVR.
Not only does the website display video footage, it also gives a description of the exact location’s coordinates, the time, postal code, the camera’s manufacturer and default login and password details.
“To remove your public camera from this site and make it private, the only thing you need to do is to change your camera password,” said Insecam.
