Homemade bomb explosions investigated

Police are investigating circumstances surrounding homemade bomb explosions on Friday.

Police are investigating the explosion of a homemade device that left two men seriously injured in Suiderberg on Friday.

The men, aged 44 and 54, were apparently experimenting with homemade bombs when a device exploded in their vehicle in an open veld in Sarel Avenue. A second one exploded outside the vehicle a few metres away.

Both were taken to Kalafong hospital for treatment under police guard.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said the two bombs contained screws and bolts.

The blast happened after 08:00 at an open field in Suiderberg near the new housing development in Lady Selbourne. Police blew up a third device in a controlled explosion, causing damage to the vehicle.

Both men were charged for manufacturing bombs illegally. There was still no clarity about their motive, Olivier said.
