Ammunition seized at Mayville house

A young couple was arrested on Tuesday after illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs were allegedly found at their home.

A young married couple from Mayville was arrested on Tuesday morning after police found 1 352 rounds of ammunition in their possession.

Warrant officer Wanda Olivier, spokesperson for the Wonderboompoort police, said hand-, hunting- and shotgun ammunition were found in the couple’s home.

The police, with the assistance of the K9-unit Soshanguve, also found a shotgun in a closet and drugs in the home.

The couple’s two small children were not with them at the time of the arrest. Family members were providing support for the children.

Olivier said the Wonderboompoort police crime prevention unit and the K9-unit followed up on a tip-off. The ammunition and drugs were scattered throughout the house but the shotgun was found in a clothing closet.

The shotgun appeared not to be the property of the couple.

The man and woman could not explain why they had the ammunition in their possession at the time of their arrest.

The couple was expected to appear in court later on Wednesday on charges of the possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs.

The police investigation continues.
