Mini sub-stations targeted by thieves

Thieves steal components from mini sub-stations, causing massive damage.

The 90 mini-substations around Centurion are being targeted by thieves and vandals.

“These mini-substations or ‘mini-subs’ are often targeted and critical components are stolen. Each time this happens, it costs on average R450 000 to repair,” said ward councillor Peter Sutton.

One of the mini-subs in Edward Avenue in Hennopspark Industrial area, next to the cemetery, is frequently targeted. It supplies power to the streetlights in Edward Avenue. Without it the street is very dark, and creates areas for criminals to hide and target people who pass by. One week ago it was targeted and stripped of parts.

“These are not amateurs, they know what they are doing. They must have had some formal training to be able to do this,” said one of the repairmen working on the mini-sub. Vandals and thieves often pose as municipal workers to give the illusion that they are legitimate workers,” he said.

“There are two key things to look out for if you suspect the person working on the mini-substation might not be legitimate. If the vehicle they are driving with does not have the official Tshwane metro logo on the side that should be an immediate cause for concern. The second thing is a job card. Although the person might not have a job card, depending on the type of work being done, they should still be able to identify their supervisor, who can confirm their legitimacy.”

He said contacting the relevant ward councillor was also a good option.

“The ward councillor in the area can come into contact with the electricity department, and the appropriate authorities can be contacted if needed.”
