Pistorius monitoring device rumour denied
Allegations that Oscar Pistorius is not eligible for correctional supervision are untrue, the department of correctional services said.
Prison authorities have rejected claims that convicted paralympian Oscar Pistorius will not be eligible for correctional supervision because an electronic monitoring device cannot be fitted to his ankle.
“We reject any notion that attempts to pre-empt any decision that will be taken with respect to the offender concerned, and that will have an impact on his rehabilitation,” correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said on Wednesday.
Pistorius is serving a five-year sentence in the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria after he was found guilty of culpable homicide for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.
The athlete could serve as little as 10 months behind bars as he will be entitled to apply for correctional supervision after this period. This could entail him being fitted with an electronic device to keep track of his movements until the five years are over.
According to the Correctional Services Regulation 28, an electronic monitoring device must be compact, non-obstructive and allow persons to carry out their normal daily activities. The regulations stipulate that electronic monitoring device must be fitted to the ankle or wrist without causing a risk to the person’s health.
Wolela said: “The department calls upon journalists to refrain from irresponsible reporting, and to take care to report news truthfully, accurately and fairly.”
