Anika’s death under spotlight

A Pretoria North court is trying to establish if anyone could be prosecuted for the brutal 2010 slaying of teenager Anika Smit, whose throat had been slit and hands were severed.

A judicial inquest into the death of schoolgirl Anika Smit, whose hands were cut off during her 2010 murder, has started in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s court.

The inquest was ordered in July by Magistrate Pierre Wessels to establish if anyone could be prosecuted for her death.

It is believed that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) subpoenaed the 17-year-old girl’s father Johan Smit and her boyfriend Nico Venter to testify in the inquest.

The grade 11 pupil at Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz in the north of Pretoria had been raped, her throat was slit and her hands were cut off in the attack in her home.

Anika had not attended school on the day of her death because of an ear infection.

At the time, her boyfriend was accused of her slaying at her father’s home in Theresa Park in March, but charges against Venter were later withdrawn.
