Still no suspect in Anika’s murder

The criminal investigation into the brutal death of a teenager continues while an formal inquest into the murder will be held next year.

The criminal investigation into the brutal death of schoolgirl Anika Smit, whose hands were cut off during her 2010 murder, continues while an formal inquest into the murder will be held on 13 February next year.

The Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a formal inquest into the murder, where it is expected the slain girl’s father Johan Smit and her boyfriend Nico Venter will testify.

Investigating officer Major Mike van Aardt said there was no accused in the matter at the moment, only interested parties, including the 17-year-old victim’s mother Charlotte Eksteen who is not expected to testify at the inquest.

“Meanwhile, we are continuing with the investigation into the murder,” Van Aardt said.

The grade 11 pupil at Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz in the north of Pretoria had been raped, had her throat slit and her hands cut off in the brutal attack at her home.

She had not attended school on the day of her death because of an ear infection.

At the time, her boyfriend was accused of her slaying at her father’s home in Theresa Park in March but charges against Venter were later withdrawn.
