Armed robberies on the rise

Police warn that armed robbery is on the rise, and urge people to remain vigilant.

Armed robberies appear to be on the rise in certain parts of Soshanguve, police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said such crimes were being reported at the Rietgat police station on a daily basis. “This is the home of armed robberies, we warn people almost every day to be extra careful.”

On Wednesday alone, three robberies were reported to the police station. In one of them, two men held up workers at gunpoint.

“They demanded money from the safe and ransacked the place and took three cellphones from the workers before fleeing.”

Mangena said there were no injuries and no one was arrested. A gun believed to belong to one of the robbers was found on the scene.

Also on Wednesday, a taxi operator and his passengers were robbed in Block HH in Soshanguve after three men ordered the taxi driver at gunpoint to stop the vehicle and lie on his stomach.

While one of them was pointing a gun at the four passengers, another was driving the taxi.

The passengers and taxi driver were dropped off at the Klipgat cemetery. The taxi was later found abandoned in a township in Klipgat. No one was injured.

Mangena urged residents to be vigilant when pulling into their driveways. “Some people leave the car keys in the ignition while opening the gate, which is very unwise,” he said.
