Man dies near protest

Man killed and four others injured in a road accident near a service delivery protest on the R55 on Monday morning.

A man was killed and four others injured on Monday when his bakkie hit a motorcycle on the R55 near Olievenhoutbosch outside Pretoria.

The driver was apparently trying to avoid a group of protesters when the accident happened, but exact details were not immediately clear. The motorcyclist and three people on the bakkie suffered injuries.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the protest over service delivery began around 06:00 and lasted until around 11:00.

Five protesters were arrested for public violence.

Mahamba said some of the protesters were gathering at the Olievenhoutbosch police station by noon, demanding the release of those arrested.

“The situation is now calm on the R55 and at the police station. No injuries have been reported during the protest,” he said by lunchtime.

He could not immediately confirm a link between the protests and the fatal accident.

“Four other people were transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention but we cannot confirm if the two incidents are related,” he said.
