Power failure shuts down Themba Water Treatment Plant in Hammanskraal

Emergency cable repairs are underway at a mini-substation after an electricity fault cut the water supply to several communities.

A power failure at the Themba Water Treatment Plant has left parts of Hammanskraal and surrounding areas without water.

The City of Tshwane Water and Sanitation Business Unit shut down the facility after an 11kV feeder cable fault disrupted operations on October 1.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the plant relies on electricity to pump water, making the closure necessary while repairs are underway.

Substation repairs underway

The affected areas include Sekampaneng, Renstown, Hammanskraal West, Suurman, Units 5 and 7, and Kanana.

According to the municipality, a contractor has been sent to the site to find the fault, terminate the cable, and clean carbon deposits in the mini-substation.

The municipality said the repair work was being treated as urgent but did not provide a timeline for restoring the water supply.

Residents urged to conserve water

Mashigo appealed to affected residents to use water sparingly while repairs continue.

Residents have been advised not to water gardens, wash vehicles, clean driveways or pavements with hosepipes, or fill swimming pools during the interruption.

The city also encouraged residents to flush toilets only when necessary, turn off running taps while brushing their teeth, and reduce overall daily water consumption.

The municipality apologised for the disruption and thanked consumers for their patience while teams work to restore plant operations.

Residents in affected areas are urged to continue conserving water until the supply interruption is resolved.
