Court ruled in favour of Woolworths

Customers can now shop without fear or intimidation from BDS members after the court ruled in Woolworths’ favour.

Woolworths customers can now shop without fear of intimidation from members of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions SA (BDS SA) after a court ruled in favour of the store.

It ordered BDS to stop organising, co-ordinating or encouraging any form of protest inside Woolworths stores.

The anti-Israeli organisation protested against Woolworths because it carries Israeli products on its shelves.

On 14 November, Woolworths applied for a court interdict to prevent activists from protesting inside its stores.

Paul Disberry, Woolworths group director, welcomed the court ruling and said the chain store had to think of its customers’ and employees’ safety although it respected the right to protest peacefully.

“Our staff and customers felt scared in the face of escalating violence and this ruling offers them some relief. Woolworths respects the constitutional rights of protesters to express their views lawfully without infringing the right of others. We trust that BDS will respect the decision of the court,” he said.

The BDS and Woolworths have agreed, out of court, to meet on or by 10 December for talks.
