Female wrestler nominated for SA Sports Awards
"You can achieve anything in life, no matter what your background".
A 24-year-old female wrestler from Moreleta Park, Pretoria East has been nominated for SA Sports Woman of the Year Award.
Mpho Madi will be representing Pretoria at the SA Sports Awards held on 30 November in Sandton.
Madi said she felt honoured for being nominated.
“I also feel happy knowing that SA has looked beyond major sports like athletics, soccer, rugby, and swimming and more into wrestling. I hope this means more chances for other sporting codes too, especially combat sports like judo, karate, MMA and grappling.”
Madi has been wrestling for the past ten years and was first introduced to the sport while still living in a children’s home in Benoni.
“A coach from the Benoni Wresting Club, Hansie Naude visited the home to ask for new wrestlers. I tried it out and I loved it. The competition and workout was the best thing that had ever happened to me,” Madi said.
“My motto is to train with the best if you want to be the best. I also believe that no matter what background you are from, you can do whatever you want to achieve in life,” she said.
