Moeggesukkel, bigger and better than ever
Charity organisation improving lives of those less fortunate.
The charity Moeggesukkel has listed a number of successes for the year. The organisation was established in 2011.
In August the team from Moeggesukkel found a man, known simply as Oom André, living on the streets of Pretoria. He was severely malnourished, beaten by robbers, had untreated wounds, and was scared of people. The team, including founder Jacques Papenfus, took André in, gave him food and shelter and slowly helped him regain his self-esteem.
André was given a shave and a haircut, a new set of clothes, and after 15 years of living on the streets, got back behind the wheel of a car. The following months, André had several doctors treat his various ailments.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the team, they managed to completely turn around a struggling man’s life.
“Moeggesukkel assists anyone who needs our help. We are based in Centurion, but we have become a hub for various charities. People often drop things off at our offices, and we then distribute it to wherever it is need,” said Papenfus.
The organisation offers help wherever there is a need. Moeggesukkel recently found two malnourished dogs living on the streets. They took the dogs in, had a vet treat and have now taken the two in as their own. The dogs did not have any names and the team asked their Moeggesukkel community for input. Various suggestions were received and finally Gabriele and Destiny were chosen.
“We have realised the need of many dogs and will be building a kennel, where dogs that need an overnight home would be welcome,” said Papenfus.
For their third birthday the Moeggesukkel team has launched the ‘Homeless Persons’ Meal Challenge’. The aim of the challenge is to raise money for other homeless people like André, and help them regain their lives, and also raise awareness about the many people struggling this Christmas.
For the challenge, you need to eat a quarter of a loaf of bread with baked beans, or a filling of your choice. The rest you give to a person in need, sharing your food with the homeless. You can then post photos of your meal and with whom you shared it on the Moeggesukkel Facebook page, and tag three friends who should do the same.
After you have done this, you donate R100 to Moeggesukkel. The money will then be used to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate, and who won’t be able to share in the Christmas joy.
“We are really grateful for all the help we have received from the community. Without their help we would not have been able to change so many lives. Thank you to everyone involved in our projects,” said Papenfus.
