Two Tshwane metro police officers were shot and seriously wounded in an automatic teller machine (ATM) bombing at a Sasol filling station in Wonderboom, north of Pretoria on Thursday night.
Lieutenant Kay Makhubela, provincial metro police spokesperson, said the two officers, who were working at a roadblock close to the filling station, were alerted of the robbery in process around 23:00.
“Six armed men had entered the convenience store and forced employees to lie on the floor while they blew up the Standard Bank ATM inside,” Makhubela said.
“The officers reacted swiftly but were shot when they arrived at the scene.”
Makhubela said one was shot in the face and the other in the upper body. Both men were on Friday in a critical but stable condition in a Pretoria hospital.
Makhubela said the robbers stole the officers’ pistols and R5 000 from a till before fleeing the scene.
He said no one had been arrested yet. Police are investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder.
