The situation in Itireleng, Laudium, was calm on Friday after it was alleged that members of the community stoned a mosque on Thursday after finding an 8-year-old boy mutilated police said.
Police spokesperson Tumisang Moloto said the situation has calmed down and the police are now monitoring the situation 24/7. “What we heard from locals is the community gathered here in the morning but at this stage it is unclear to us what they were gathering for,” he said.
On Wednesday evening, police found the mutilated body of an 8-year-old boy in the mosque. He went missing on Tuesday and it is believed the boy’s eyes had been gouged out and his genitals cut off.
The mother of the child was called to the scene and she identified the body as her missing child, Moloto said. Moloto said a 39-year-old suspect was arrested after he was taken in for questioning. He was arrested after residents and police searched for him Wednesday evening.
The man was charged with murder and will appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon.
