New quota to be implemented in cricket
A new quotas rules says that six players of colour should feature in the starting teams of the domestic teams in South Africa.
A new quotas rule is set to be implemented, where a maximum of six players of colour must be featured in the starting eleven of South African Domestic Cricket, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Tuesday.
CEO Haroon Lorgat said during the launch of the new Africa T20 Cup that the issue of transformation remained a priority for CSA. “I’m definitely not apologising for transformation; we’ll pursue it aggressively and responsibly,” he said.
From next season, all franchise teams will need to field at least six players of colour in their starting eleven, with three being black African players. It is unclear if the same rule will apply in the national team or not – currently there are about four players of colour that play regularly for the Proteas or feature constantly in the first eleven.
Last month, after the Proteas’ semi-final loss against New Zealand, reports emerged that CSA had interfered with the team selection. Apparently Kyle Abbott was supposed to play ahead of Vernon Philander, but an SMS was sent to the Proteas coach in the early hours before the game telling him to select a player of colour instead of the white player.
CSA, together with the minister of sport and recreation Fikile Mbalula, denied the allegations. “We know who is spreading these speculations and we will not dignify them by mentioning their names. These are acts by desperate colonial apartheid apologist(s) … We shall not be deterred by their mischief,” Mbalula said in a statement and on his Twitter account.
Further information about the transformation will be heard when the domestic seasons resumes in May.
