Another police officer killed in shootout

Police officer killed in shootout with robbers.

A police officer has been killed in a shootout in Temba, north of Pretoria.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the 35-year-old constable and a colleague responded to a complaint of a business robbery at Sekampane Section at 02:30 on Thursday.

“On their arrival, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. A police officer was shot and wounded and one suspect fatally shot,” said Dlamini.

“The police officer was taken to a hospital and died on arrival. His colleague was not injured.”

Dlamini said the would-be robber was identified as 26-year-old Oupa Chauke. His accomplice escaped.

Dlamini urged communities to become involved in the fight against crime by reporting it.

“Information may be forwarded to the provincial duty Brigadier on 082-313-8299 and a provincial duty General on 082-444-4354 at all hours,” he said.

The constable’s death came a day after a police officer was shot and killed by a gang of armed robbers while on duty at Vosloorus Crossing Mall on Wednesday at 07:30.

The robbers fled in a silver Nissan Tiida and a white Audi A4. The Nissan Tiida was found abandoned in Vosloorus Ext. 2.

Police are searching for the gang.
