Police determined to find escapees
Gauteng Police will leave no stone unturned to find the five awaiting trial escapees.
Police said on Tuesday that they will be thoroughly investigating the escape of five awaiting trial prisoners.
The prisoners escaped from police custody on Monday afternoon while they were being transported to the Kgosi Mampuru Prison.
In a statement the Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba said: “A thorough investigation will be done and if our members have been negligent, they will be held accountable.”
The Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the five men escaped on the corner of E’skia Mphahlele Drive and Bloed Street.
“It was established that the escapees managed to remove the iron mesh on the police vehicle and kicked out the rear window. They jumped out of the vehicle and ran away,” she said.
Mothutsane said that the police fine combed the area but no arrests were made.
She explained that police officers from Bela-Bela SAPS were transporting ten suspects from Bela-Bela Magistrate Court to Kgosi Mampuru Prison when five managed to escape from the vehicle.
The five trial awaiting prisoners that escaped are: Liston Baloyi (22), Innocent Mahlalela (40), Sammy Sibiya (23), Justice Moakiri (27) and Diver Mogudu (25).
The escapees were all arrested for armed robbery and not all the cases are related.
“Many hours and manpower have been invested toward the arrest of these dangerous criminals and the public is assured that everything possible will be done to re-arrest them. A charge of escaping from lawful custody will be added to the other crimes they have been charged with,” said General Mothiba.
The public is urged not to confront the escapees as they are dangerous, but rather to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or SMS Crime line on 32211 or contact the nearest police station.
Identification documents of the five men will be released later.
