Help police find these escapees
Police have released photos of the five men that escaped from police custody.
Gauteng police on Tuesday afternoon released photos of the Bela Bela awaiting trial escapees.
The prisoners escaped from police custody on Monday afternoon while they were being transported to the Kgosi Mampuru II prison.
In a statement the Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba said: “A thorough investigation will be done and if our members have been negligent, they will be held accountable.”
Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the five men escaped on the corner of E’skia Mphahlele Drive and Bloed Street.
“It was established the escapees managed to remove the iron mesh on the police vehicle and kicked out the rear window. They jumped out of the vehicle and ran away,” she said.
Mothutsane said the police fine-combed the area but no arrests were made.
She explained, police officers from Bela-Bela police were transporting 10 arrested persons from Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court to Kgosi Mampuru II prison when five of them managed to escape from the vehicle.
The five trial awaiting prisoners that escaped are: Liston Baloyi (22), Innocent Mahlalela (40), Sammy Sibiya (23), Justice Moakiri (27) and Diver Mogudu (25).
The escapees were all arrested for armed robbery. Not all the cases are related.
“Many hours and manpower have been invested toward the arrest of these dangerous criminals and the public is assured everything possible will be done to re-arrest them. A charge of escaping from lawful custody will be added to the other crimes they have been charged with,” said Mothiba.
The public is urged not to confront the escapees as they are dangerous, but rather to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or SMS Crime line on 32211 or contact the nearest police station.
