Pistorius not being released on Friday
Oscar Pistorius will not be released from jail on Friday as it was previously expected.
Oscar Pistorius would not be released from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison II on Friday as expected, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed on Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Logan Maistry told Rekord that Pistorius will not be out on Friday.
Maistry however did not elaborate on the reason why.
Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha was seeking legal opinion on Tuesday on the planned release of Pistorius.
This after the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa (PWMSA) petitioned the government to block Pistorius’ release early this week.
They wrote a letter to the minister saying that a 10-month length of his jail time is an insult to women. Steenkamp’s parents, Barry and June have also objected Pistorius’ release.
Masutha said he needed to know if the release was lawful and whether he had legal power to intervene.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide after he shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
