Hijacker arrested in Eersterust
Police arrested a hijacker in Eersterust, following a chase across the city.
A 38-year-old hijacker was arrested in Eersterust after a police chase across the city.
A vehicle had been hijacked in Garsfontein on Friday afternoon and police caught up with the thief shortly after President Jacob Zuma had addressed Eersterust residents on substance abuse.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said police received information about a hijacked silver-grey Mazda being chased from Garsfontein.
“Silverton police spotted the car moving towards Eersterust and joined in the chase. The hijacker apparently bumped the car on Paul Pietersen Avenue and tried to run away on foot,” he said.
According to Facebook page Listen Luister, the hijacker tried to fire shots at a police helicopter that was part of the chase.
However, Maheso said no shooting was reported. “The hijacker was arrested and charged with possession of a suspected stolen vehicles.”
The man would appear in court soon.
