Two held over Laudium officer’s killing
Two people have been arrested for the murder of Constable Ronnie Baloyi who was shot and killed in Atteridgeville on Friday evening.
A man and woman were arrested on Sunday over the murder of the Laudium police officer at the weekend.
Gauteng police provincial spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe said the two were taken into custody at the Bosman taxi rank in the city centre.
“They were positively identified as the people who were involved in the shooting of the police officer,” she said.
Constable Ronald Baloyi (37) was off duty when he was shot dead in Atteridgeville on Friday evening.
According to the SA Police Service’s Facebook page, the murder weapon was found in their possession.
Selepe said the two would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
MEC of Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane visited the family of Baloyi in Saulsville on Monday afternoon to extend her heartfelt condolences.
She also visited the family of the other police officer who was shot and killed in Hillbrow.
The constable’s vehicle was parked on the side of the road when two unknown men and a woman approached him around 20:00 in Atteridgeville.
“They walked up to him and shot him in the upper body. Nothing was taken from him. He was rushed to Kalafong hospital,” she told Rekord.
She said the officer died while doctors were treating him. Selepe said police were investigating the exact details of the murder.
“We are still busy with an investigation into yet another killing of a police officer.”
Laudium police spokesperson Captain Reed Steynberg said Laudium police were devastated by the tragic news.
“The members are not taking this well and will be receiving counselling. The constable was supposed to work night shift on Saturday,” said Steynberg.
She said the officer’s wife was expecting twins.
“It is terrible. His wife was supposed to have her surprise baby shower the following day and now those children will have to grow up without a father. Laudium police sends their deepest condolences to his wife and family.”
Baloyi and his wife Patricia lived with their daughter in a rented room in Saulsville.
Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee lit a candle in honour of Baloyi at the Laudium police station on Sunday.
“For those who have worked with Constable Baloyi and us who know him for many years we know he was very dedicated to his work,” Abramjee said.
Two other police officers were shot in Gauteng at the weekend — both of them in Hillbrow, Johannesburg. One died on the scene and the second officer is being treated in hospital.
