Five escaped robbery prisoners still at large
Police are still searching for awaiting-trial prisoners who broke out of a police vehicle in Marabastad.
The search for the five escapees that broke out of a police vehicle last week continues.
The prisoners were being transported from Bela-Bela to the Kgosi Mampuru II prison last Monday when they removed the iron mesh behind the window at the back of the police van, kicked out the window and jumped free.
“We have a team consisting of detectives and intelligence members searching for them,” Colonel Ronel Otto, the acting Limpopo police spokesperson said.
She said an investigation into the circumstances of the escape was underway.
“Should any of our members be found to have been negligent or not to have followed standard operating procedure, disciplinary steps will be taken [against them] and this can even lead to [their] dismissal from the police,” said Otto.
Last week, Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the police combed the area [where the escape occurred] but did not find the escapees.
The escapees are Liston Baloyi (22), Innocent Mahlalela (40), Sammy Sibiya (23), Justice Moakiri (27) and Diver Mogudu (25); all arrested for armed robbery.
The public is urged not to confront the escapees as they are dangerous, but rather to contact Crime Stop at 08600-10111 or SMS Crime line at 32211 or contact the nearest police station.
