Photos of Atteridgeville escapees released
Police have released photos of the two escapees from Atteridgeville who are still on the loose.
Gauteng police have released photos of the two prisoners who escaped in Atteridgeville on Tuesday.
Abram Matombo (36) and Bethuel Fosi (25) were believed to be dangerous, said police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng.
Matombo had been on trial for armed robbery and Fosi for theft.
They escaped while being transported in a police van from the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court to Kgosi Mampuru II prison.
Five armed men ambushed the vehicle and freed the two. Nine other prisoners in the van also made a run for it but were re-arrested
Mofokeng said a special team had been set up to probe the escape.
Earlier reports that one of the escapees was arrested in connection with the killing of a Laudium police officer, Constable Ronald Baloyi, have been rejected by police.
Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said every effort would be made to find the two escapees.
Mofokeng warned the public against confronting the two men.
