Police On Record to ‘level the playing field’
New initiative to help police and communities build a better relationship.
Police officers ‘taking chances’ will soon be caught in the act thanks to a new initiative by eblockwatch.
The initiative, called ‘Police On Record’ will provide those who sign up with a way of recording and immediately sending though any conversation recorded with the police, whether it is good or bad.
“People can join this initiative at R45 a month. When they have joined up, all they have to do is join the WhatsApp group we have set up for them,” said André Snyman, founder of eblockwatch.
“When in any situation with a police officer, inform them that you are part of eblockwatch, an organisation set up to catch corrupt police officials. Show them the special ‘Police On Record’ sticker that you can print out and tell them that you will be recording the conversation. If the policeman or woman is genuine and simply doing their job, they should have no problem with you recording the conversation.”
The entire conversation with the police officer is then immediately sent via WhatsApp to eblockwatch, who can then render assistance if needed and have the evidence of what happened on record.
“This way, a corrupt police official can’t take the phone and erase the data,” said Snyman.
He said: “When you are alone at night and the police pull you over, it is a very scary situation. We started this after repeated incidents of police targeting young people late at night. This is a pretty simple system, but it is effective. This initiative will help form a better relationship between people and the police.”
