VIDEO: Man hit in shooting drama at Menlyn Shopping Centre
An eyewitness spoke to Rekord on how he helped apprehend an armed man during a shooting at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre on Monday.
A man was seriously wounded in a shooting between police and three fugitives at Menlyn Shopping Centre on Monday morning.
Moot Crime Prevention chairperson Theo Breedt, who also works at the shopping centre, said the wounded man was shot by police. He was hit in the leg.
“I heard a lady screaming and a few seconds later I saw a guy run past me with his hand in a bag and I immediately noticed he had a gun. I kept my distance and one of my managers of New World store chased after the guy,” he told Rekord.
He said his manager arrested the man after he dropped the bag with the gun off the bridge.
“Security came to the scene. Apparently a second suspect was also caught by police and a third was shot in the legs,” he said.

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre’s spokesperson Andrea De Witt said no crimes were committed inside the premises. She said the arrested men were pursued onto their property by police.
“No shoppers or staff were injured during the arrest,” De Witt said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics arrived to the scene to find a large police presence.
“Medics were taken to a man that had sustained serious gunshot wounds. After he was stabilised at the scene, they transported him to a local hospital for the care that he required.”
De Witt said the shopping centre was trading as usual.
