NATIONAL NEWS: Two dead, four injured in mall robbery
Shootout drama at Johannesburg mall leaves two dead and four injured.
Two people were killed and four others wounded in shootout on Tuesday between robbers and the police at the Clearwater mall, north west of Johannesburg.
Mall marketing manager Cecile Braun said six armed men attempted to rob an RTT truck of laptops and cellphones but were intercepted by the police.
Cornered, the men exchanged gunfire with the police and two of them were killed and four injured, including an apparent bystander.
“Police are currently on the scene, and more information on the robbery will be issued shortly,” said Braun.
RTT logistics confirmed the attempted robbery and said none of its employees was hurt.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring confirmed that two people were killed.
“One person was killed on the scene and another succumbed to his wounds on the way to hospital,” he said.
“Four other people sustained minor to moderate gunshot wounds. One of them is believed to be a member of the public, but this is still to be confirmed by the police investigation.”
More details were not immediately available and the police were still to comment.
