“Not enough arrests for police killings” – DA
DA launches enquires on police-killing low conviction rate.
Democratic Alliance (DA) provincial leader John Moodley will send an inquiry to the Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba stating the DA’s concern over the inability of the SA Police Service to bring police killers to book.
Moodley said: “It has emerged that 136 Gauteng police officers were killed in the line of duty since 2010, with only 35 perpetrators successfully incarcerated.”
“None were brought to book since 2012 to 2013. Crime in South Africa has reached critical proportions and the SAPS will only be able to turn the tide if officials are properly trained and equipped to do their job as best they can,” said Moodley
On Friday, DA members met at the National Assembly tabling a plan to address their concerns to Parliament’s portfolio committee, discussing the under-resourcing and training challenges in the SAPS.
“The war on crime will only be won when South Africans from all walks of life and political persuasions work together to ensure that the brave men and women on the thin blue line are given every resource to tackle criminals in our society.
“Mass recruitment of millions of people in the police, without proper training of officers, helps no one if the leadership cannot comply or is incompetent,” said Moodley.
