Menlyn shooters still to appear in court
Three men arrested after Menlyn mall shooting have yet to appear in court.
The three men arrested after a shootout at Menlyn Park shopping centre on Monday afternoon are yet to appear in court.
Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the shooting occurred when police cornered a car they had been chasing from Woodlands Boulevard, east of Pretoria.
“At 12:15, Garsfontein police spotted a suspicious silver Audi A4 with three occupants… The police followed the vehicle and indicated the driver to pull over in Atterbury Road in Menlyn,” said Weilbach.
“One of the occupants pointed a firearm at the police and the police responded by firing a shot at the suspects’ vehicle.”
Once the car came to a stop, one of the men tried to escape on foot but was shot in the leg before being subdued in the underground parking at the Menlyn Park shopping centre.
Weilbach said although the men had not appeared in court yet, they would within the week.
“The two men who were arrested are still in police custody. The one man who was injured in the shootout is still in hospital under secure police supervision.”
The three men will be charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
