Criminal charges have been laid after a hidden camera were apparently found in the toilets of employees at a Silverton grocery store, police confirmed on Friday.
Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said the workers laid the charges of crimen injuria against their employer, Helga’s grocery store.
“At the moment, no arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.”
Times Live reported that a miniature surveillance camera was discovered on the ceiling of their staff toilets.
It said more than 40 male employees had stopped working after they discovered the camera.
The manager of the store reportedly denied denied any knowledge of the camera and said he knew nothing of the matter.
The report further quoted an employee, Moses Phetla, who saw the camera and put gum over it. He went out and returned only to find the owner standing behind him.
“This means that he has realised him camera 15 was blank on the monitor and came to investigate,” Phetla told the news site.
Isaac Mangena of the South African Human Rights Commission was not aware of the matter.
He said, however, that cameras set up in employees’ toilets would amount to an infringement of their rights.
