Burst water pipe floods Phomolong

Another water pipe burst in Phomolong Informal Settlement.

More than 50 shacks were damaged when a water pipe burst in Phomolong informal settlement in Block C earlier this week.

Owners had no choice but to abandon their homes to squat with friends or family.

Community leader Duke Masemola said he noticed a leak in the morning.

It was not that serious around 10:00, but by the afternoon the leak was gushing water.

“And in a matter seconds, the whole area was flooded,” he said.

“We are lucky no one was hurt, but we want Tshwane to formalise Phomolong because people have been living here for so many years.”

Another resident, Jabulani Mabena, appealed to the metro to fix the pipe before there was a loss of life again.

In 2012, flooding from a burst water pipe claimed the lives of two children and seven people were injured.

More than 800 people had to be evacuated at the time to be relocated in Marikana, Nellmapius

“People are now scared and fear for their lives,” Mabena said.
