Centurion burst pipe spews gallons of water

Gallons of water was wasted in Centurion on Monday, due to a burst water pipe.

A burst pipe sent thousands of litres of water down the roads of Rooihuiskraal north, Centurion, on Monday morning.

Ward 69 Councillor Marietha Aucamp said the pipe burst in the early hours of the morning on the corner of Theuns Van Niekerk Street and Nicator Drive, but the metro only responded eight hours later.

“When the residents phoned in to report the burst pipe just after midnight, the call centre said the system was down and they could not log the call. The metro only arrived around 08:00.”

She said thousands of litres of water were wasted.

“It was like a river. At some stage, it was so bad that people could not drive through the stream of water.”

She said the metro was clearing up the road and repairing the damaged pipe.

Residents would remain without water on Monday, until the pipe was repaired, she said.

“I do not think supply will be restored before 20:00. The metro should investigate how they can respond to such incidents quicker as the country is now in a water crisis,” she said.
