Sundowns brush aside Leopards in CAF
Sundowns defeated AC Leopards 2-0 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League on Saturday.
Mamelodi Sundowns defeated AC Leopards 2-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League on Saturday evening at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Goals from Keagan Dolly and Leonardo Castro ensured that the Brazilians had an advantage heading to Congo next week. Another impressive fact for the Mamelodi team was that they didn’t concede a goal at home.
‘Downs started the brighter of the two teams and in the sixth minute, they nearly got the opening goal but Khama Billiat’s shot went wide of goal.
Billiat continued to be a thorn in the Congolese side as the Leopards defenders struggled to contain him.
It looked as though Leopards were happy to sit back and hit on a counter.
Sundows finally broke the deadlock on a stroke of half-time thanks to a sublime finish from Dolly. The former Ajax Cape Town man created space for himself before unleashing a rocket which left the keeper with no chance.
After the break, the home side doubled their lead when Castro found the net.
Leopards tried to hit back but the ’Downs defence held firm.
Pitso Mosimane’s men were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute but Anthony Laffor’s penalty was saved after initial goalkeeper Herve Lomboto had received a red card for a foul.
The miss didn’t prove costly as Downs held on for a 2-0 win.
The second leg will be played next week in Congo Brazzaville.
